Aquatic Therapy

Maryland Sports Medicine

Professional SportsCare & Rehab has a beautiful, 14,000-gallon pool located within our Gambrills facility, where we offer aquatic therapy services for general water physical therapy and wellness and Arthritis Foundation classes. Our physical therapy staff is fully trained in aquatic rehabilitation and will design an aquatic program and aquatic therapy exercises based on your unique situation, needs and goals.

About Aqua Therapy

Water therapy uses the physical properties of water to assist in patient healing and exercise performance. These properties include buoyancy, which allows less weight bearing through the joints, and viscosity, or resistance, which is patient controlled by the speed of the exercises. Pressure from the water assists in promoting circulation and decreasing swelling. During pool therapy, the water is kept at a comfortable temperature of 92-94 degrees. This warmth allows a calming effect that improves a patient's tolerance to exercise and overall function.

The aquatic environment prepares patients, through aquatic rehab, for dry land therapeutic exercises they may not yet be ready to perform. The physical therapy pool is also used in combination with dry land exercises and/or manual therapy.

Aquatic physical therapy and aquatic rehabilitation can effectively treat a broad range of conditions that include:

  • Low Back Pain
  • Spinal Disorders
  • Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Chronic Pain Conditions
  • Knee Pain
  • Gait Deviations

Testimonials

"It was such a pleasure to have my therapy here in Emmitsburg with such wonderful staff. I broke my hip in May and now I have pins in my hip. My doctor recommended therapy two days a week. Your staff was so friendly and efficient that I am now able to walk again. We like your facility so much that we have bought a membership and plan to keep fit by attending three times a week. Thank you for such wonderful facility. Emmitsburg is lucky to have such a wonderful place."
